The gems might also add abilities to the armor. Let’s add:

    • White with rainbow all over=opal
    • Light gray with gray pattern=howlite
    • Milky, Smokey, grayish =moonstone
    • pink=rose quartz
    • light green with blueish tinge=jade

Howlite would mine faster, opal would provide farther sight, moonstone gives night vision, Jade gives water breathing, emerald gives luck, redstone Crystal gives sharpness, topaz gives fire protection, obsidian gives Unbreaking X, and other than obsidian, red stone crystal and howlite the effects only last for a few seconds when added to the armor

This could be a fun addition.  It would be a nice mapmaking feature in having custom armor more accessible.  Some people might disagree though and would want to have their own textures in data packs overriding these. I don't know, but I still give you my vote for this idea.

This is a brilliant idea. Most aesthetic uses for new ores are pointless, but your tools and armor are on you at all times, so your customized stuff would always be visible.

This would be amazing, one use for customized armor could be team/clan identifications in battle, since currently Leather is the only type of armor that can be color-coded

well if customized equipment are only vanity and not special (mining faster, more damage etc) this idea would be great. but (this part is my personal opnion) i think this must only work for iron tools, because the other type tools (diamond, stone etc) have their own color but iron tools are white. also i think the textures of different embedded tools must vary. i mean i dislike overlay. also i think there must be another gemstones for each color. you must add for simple turquoise and use it insteed of diamond for cyan color. AND the best! the biome u can find each gemstone must vary!! etc u can find garnet only in savana! HOHOHO!

I like the ability to "dye" your tools and armor with gemstones. It adds personality and helps keep items apart aswell as being a simple cosmetic change. However special effects dont seem very vanilla

What if you use the obsidian to make it almost indestructible? And maybe for the swords they will have extra damage. Anyways.. this is a really great idea so I give you my vote for this

It would be  cool if we could have or make amour like in story mode give the player the more options for customization

instead of the same shape just with more colors plus the amour covers most player skins defeating the purpose.

this is a great idea and would add more variety and would be an easy way to add more weapons and armor in to minecraft

I really like this idea! - It should be done within the new smithing table too. Each 'upgrade' should have an effect to the specified tool/armour. This should be done with 5 new crystals, which can be found deep underground in the overworld.

    For example:

    • Any weapon + Ruby Gemstone = +0.5 Attack speed
    • Any weapon + Amethyst Gemstone = +0.5 Attack range
    • Any armour + Opal Gemstone = +1 Armour Toughness
    • Any armour + Sunstone Gemstone = +1 Knockback Resistance
    • Any Tool + Topaz Gemstone = +1 Extraction (ores that need to be smelted will drop the ingot instead of the block)

Only 1 gemstone can be applied to a piece of gear, but can be removed in a grindstone. (You do not get the gem back)

It adds another layer of exploration in the overworld and an additional layer on top of enhantments!
