Redstone is a dust, logically we should be able to scrape it into whatever shape we want. I would suggest that while redstone places normally, you can click on it like the repeater or comparator to toggle the direction you are looking.
For example you want redstone to point into a block that it is running next to. Instead of moving the dust another meter away and putting in a repeater you could just face the direction of the block and click on the redstone. Some times adding the repeater dose not mater but a lot of times you don't have the space for it, or you need precise timing that will be messed up if you put in a repeater.
You could not only use it to force connections but also stop connections. Some time you have redstone pointing into a block that you don't want it to. If you have the space you can place a block to redirect it but again a lot of times you don't.
As mentioned in the comments it would probably get annoying accidentally clicking on redstone all the time. I would suggest that it only work with a particular item in your hand. This could be a new item like a scraper but I would actually prefer it to be a simple item like a stick or the dust itself.
In conclusion this would add a tun of functionality without having to add any blocks to the game.
