Hello, I am Remor, a Minecraft player since the Summer of 2013.
At the moment I am starting to realize, that something is missing in this game; something oh so important... a cause for our actions and why this gigantic world exists.
Now, I know, that there is that game series, that calls itself "Minecraft Story Mode", but what we can see there is basically a bunch of people hardcore roleplaying on a server with a bunch of plugins. I contrast, the Singleplayer's story is still missing.
A story in this case should play out differently than, what you might be used to when you here the term "Story". It should not interfere with the freedom, that the game provides.
The Story would be delivered to the player in various ways, depending on their playstyle. If you choose to live in a village, the villagers should somehow slowly tell you the story (for that to happen, villages would have to be upgraded a lot though); if you choose to travel the expansive landscape and search for structures, you would find the story in ancient texts on signs and in books, scattered throughout old structures; if you however choose to settle down out in the middle of nowhere, I would actually like to options: Either you only experience the effects of the story without ever getting to know the reason behind said story or you can discover old letters and such things in underground structures and mob drops.
Regardless of what path you choose, it will always be a slightly alternating story, since it is shown to you from the standpoint of different timeframes (the present view on it from the villagers, an older view on it through letters and such things found in mob drops and underground structures and the ancient view delivered through ancient texts found in ancient structures), giving you all the freedom you could want and a reason to use it.
Unless you count in the effects of the story. The cause for your actions should be felt gameplaywise.
This means, that there should be activity out there, that influences the player, either after a certain time or other conditions are met.
So what would happen in the frame of the story?
My personal idea would be: First you wake up at your spawnpoint; then you choose your path by playing a certain way (explore / live in a village / settle down alone in the middle of nowhere) and play like you usually would. After, let's say, you got an iron ingot you start getting raided and ambushed by some kind of bandits (perhaps illagers), who will be able to strike down your doors and take all, they see as valuable (iron, gold, diamonds) and store in some kind of base (so your progress isn't lost). If you manage to take down their leader, the raids will stop and the next phase will start.
Some time has to pass until the next event starts. The world would eventually show signs of some kind of dimensional rift starting to appear (sometimes the sky would change colour, anomalious paricle effects would appear close to the player and so on) until a nether portal appears and starts sending out creatures from the nether to take over the overworld (if you already built a nether portal yourself, the invasion would start there). Now you would have to get to the portal, which would lead to a nether fortress, which you would have to get through and defeat the Nether's boss (not the Wither). Afterwards, the invasion would stop.
Some more time would pass and a purple beacon would appear in a chunk, that is at the rim of the player's render distance (perhaps supported by some kind of sound effect to make the player more aware of it). If you go towards it, you will find the entrance to the stronghold, which has nothing to do with gameplay, so I won't go on about it here. In short, go into the stronghold and find the enderportal. If you activate the portal loads of endermen will come teleporting out, look at you and teleport away (this will significantly increase their spawnrate in the overworld). Now proceed to enter the end and kill the enderdragon. This will result in the endermen's spwnrate normalizing (or decreasing beyond that point) in the overworld again. After this the credits could roll and you would be told, that now the world is free from some great evil or seomthing and now you can explore to your heart's content, like previously with the difference, that you earned that freedom.
Well, this is how I basically picture a story in minecraft, though I am open to suggestions, since this obviously gets very repetitive (an event happens; enemy groups spawn and attack the player; you search for their source and kill a boss to stop it) and I have been very vague when it comes to the story itself (the one, that you are told), which I suggest to talk about some ancient force creating the world of minecraft, it dissappearing and leaving an evil force in it's place, which also dissappeared later on leaving only the remnants of those forces in the minecraft world together with the player (who could be seen as a new good force (or good and evil) creation), so have your fun.
Thank you for your attention.
