Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

Custom Lights: Making Any Block a Light Source

Custom Light Sources: Use Glowstone on Blocks Causes them to Emit Light

Too long have builders and OCD players alike struggled with mob-proofing their builds while keeping the theme and decoration standardized. 

All blocks, transparent and solid alike, should be able to be modified with Glowstone dust (right click), and they should emit light as a torch would. 

Glowing blocks mined or broken should drop the item and return the glowstone dust, much like breaking a block with redstone dust does.

    I've always seen this struggle as a challenge to be outmaneuvered via clever visual deceptions, so I'm not so sure how much I like this idea, although I appreciate its being brought up for discussion.

    Using, the mod Optifine You can achieve the same idea by holding a light source or throwing it on the ground.  However, I believe Mojang tried to team up with Optifine but Optifine declined.  So I want to say that they aren't able to add this into the game unless Optifine approves of this I think.

    @rarity41 I'm not talking about dynamic lighting. I'm discussing making any block a light source.

    Don't bother with red stone, just provide more light emitting blocks and more importantly light slabs.

    I suggest this should work like redstone. Glowstone dust can be placed on top of any block that redstone dust can be placed on. It is invisible but the hitbox can be seen if you hover over it. It emits a light level the same as a torch.

    I also think that glowstone blocks, end rods, redstone lamps and sea lanterns should emit more light than a torch. I made a separate suggestion for that.

    I think it should emit a light level of 10 like soulfire lights instead of 15 like torchs.

    I agree. Allowing the player to make their own light sources of existing blocks would definitely be a great change to see. No matter how many lighting options are added to the game, options will be limited. This is especially apparent in large, flat areas where hidden lighting is extremely difficult to conceal.

     

    The glowstone dust adding light to a block with right click is the perfect solution in my view. It allows players the freedom to fundamentally alter the way they play for the first time. Instead of building their buildings around light, they would now be able to build light around their builds. This is because they'd no longer have to be concerned about fitting in lighting in certain areas like they do now to make a build safe. There would still be a cost to do that (the glowstone dust) but it opens up an entirely new avenue and way to thinking about building in Minecraft that I think is sorely needed.

    They need to add the "light_block"'s from the Bedrock version to Java, they are awesome! They are invisible, but can emit a custom light level (reaching from 0 to 15). They should show an icon, just like the barrier does, if you hold it, unlike it currently does in Bedrock. They also maybe should be invincible, only breakable using such a light holding in your hand.

    I think the glow squid should drop the item that makes any block glow. This would give a use to it, and wouldn't be overpowered if you need nine of them or something, and if it is really rare in those big underwater caves.
