Or how about being able to place gunpowder like redstone dust, and ignite that?

String is already place-able though so it seems simpler to do.

I like the idea of a fuse, string is often rather common, while finding gunpowder can be a real pain. For me, getting even some tnt is difficult enough, as creepers dont cope well, and then to waste it on one explosion? No way...

Yes definitely this would be cool!

And then have a new "Gunpowder String" which is just string and gunpowder, and that would be a much faster burning fuse. It would also burn away if it was attached to tripwire hooks and then stood on. (Cool for adventure maps where you have to go through a door very quickly and you only get one chance because the tripwire activation burns away)

You are right about gunpowder being hard to get
alot of people with older maps and more stuff will find that just making a bunch of TNT isn't very satisfying though, so gunpowder should be more useful.

Still, this post is better for the fuse becuase string is easier to get.
