Not a bad idea. But why stop at 16 colors? They could have different patterns and such, like the new tropical fish.

i think the game as a whole desperately needs an full update surrounding mainly atmospheric things like this (the ocean has a lot of atmospheric particles and mobs but the rest of the game is completely lacking)

ooh, maybe you could make a bug net and have some little butterfly glasshouses?

We also need nets and be able to hoard them like we do fish.

There was a mod that added butterflies to Minecraft and it seemed really nice, there was 3 or 4 types of butterflies for each biomes, you could make a butterfly net, used to catch butterflies (you need to have a bucket in your inventory to keep the butterfly you catch).  The captured butterfly could be released or you could put them in an item frame to make a collection (a butterfly that you put in an item frame is dead and can obviously no longer be released alive).

That's what I remember from this mod and I think these were great idea that could be used for the butterfly mob

It might also be cool if you could also have something like a butterfly in a bottle, or just a small, one block, enclosure for the butterfly’s.

The Butterfly Mod that was mentioned is Butterfly Mania, It was a Butterfly collecting mod.  So Book for Buttrflies Caught,  Frames, Jars, Butterfly nets.  It would be a nice touch to minecraft to have these things.  But I think the butterflies should compliment the bees in the polinating process of flowers and crops.  Im sure people would love to make green houses that have both bees and Butterflies in them.

Thatd be amazing, I was going to post this but after searching i found you already had the idea. I think similar to bees they should have cocoon blocks which can be mined for string. Cocoons can spawn in any flower filled biome, and after about a day or so, they hatch and spawn a butterfly or two. If mined before hand with silk touch, you can place it somewhere and the butterflies that spawn from it will stay in the area without despawning, so long as they have flowers nearby. If there are both flowers nearby, and trees to nest on, then they will continue to spawn more cocoons on the trees. Butterflies could be able to use nectar from flowers, to do an effect similar to bonemeal, where they spread the growth of flowers. As well as bees and spiders attacking butterflies. When killed, have a chance to drop butterfly wings, which can be placed in an item frame as a decoration. Make maybe 5-10 different looking wings to make them collectable in game. These are just my thoughts, id love the idea.

Thinking about it, it would be really fun to have an indoor garden with various butterflies in it. But also, maybe butterflies leave pollen behind every 20-30 minutes when there are at least 4 or 5 flowers around it? Then you can use pollen on a beehive (which is already in minecraft) to boost honey/honeycomb production?

I definitely agree with this, I think they should have a 40% chance to spawn in a chunk and they would spawn in groups of 2 to 4. It would be cool if they used some real life butterflies for some of the variants.

I was thinking that they should add the whole cycle, they could add many different species such as monarchs. Maybe they can add a jar that you can raise a butterfly in. Maybe you could tame them by raising them up to follow you. I think it would be very educational for Minecraft to add butterflies.

They could also help with your health by regenerating your hearts when low if you have them following you around??.

The children of the butterflies are said to be caterpillars.

Here are a few ideas for butterflies. First off they should also spawn in jungle biomes. Second you should be able to catch the butterflies with nets like you can catch fish with buckets. This will make it so that the butterfly you catch won't despawn. Lastly butterflies should land on trees and your head if you are standing still. That is all I have to say aND thank you for your time.

I think the butterflies should follow you if you are holding a flower.

they could also drop something to have more importance (like a rare item to decorate, for example)

I would have Butterflies have patterns just like banners as well as a few unique ones. (Dead (sorry)) Butterfly items could then be used as Banner Patterns to copy the pattern. Even more useful, they could be added onto Elytras

Nets could be used to capture a bunch of bugs such as bees, silverfish, endermites, etc.

I also think that glass blocks should be hollow. This would allow butterflies to be inside of them, as well as other useful features
