I believe I have a solution that EVERYONE can get behind. As of now, it seems all 1.8 players just want their style of combat back, all 1.9 players want to keep the one there is right now, and Mojang just wants to settle the debates in a way that's practical. I believe I can provide that. This solution is simple, which is why I'm surprised it's not yet been tackled, but here it is:
So basically, the damage delay meter system would STAY in the game, but the effect it has would be somewhat diminished. I'll explain through examples. Let's say right now that a player on 1.9 gets a fully charged hit on another player, and the hit deals 10 hearts. Using that same weapon in the same scenario, if he got a fully UNcharged hit, it would likely deal somewhere between half a heart and a full heart in damage. That's a drop from 100% damage all the way down to about 7%. I feel the best compromise would be to make it so the drop isn't so massive. Under this system, a fully UNcharged hit would deal about 40% of total maximum damage, whereas fully charged hits would deal 100%. And I'm going to explain now why it's such a productive idea below:
1.8 players just want to be able to have somewhat fast-paced combat that's skill based. We feel 1.9 combat does not reflect that. In this system, we'd be able to play somewhat similarly and enjoy the game like we did before. On the other hand, a 1.9 player could be more patient and deal much bigger damage by clicking slower, and it'd be just as valid of a playstyle. 1.8 players could play how they want, and 1.9 players could play how they want under the same system. And you know what makes it better? It's actually much more realistic! Picture this scenario in real life, right. Let's say you have a sword and are slicing at someone. With a well calculated strike, you can deal an incredible blow that'd be much more powerful than just rapid strikes with less thought behind them. HOWEVER, even rapid strikes with a blade are still strikes with a blade, it's not like doing it quickly and less carefully turns the blade in to a feather. With how it is now, an uncharged hit deals virtually no damage at all, as if you were merely tickling them. Under this system, it makes a lot more sense, because charged hits deal much more damage, but uncharged ones don't do nothing at all. Everyone wins! 1.8 players can enjoy their style of play, 1.9 players can enjoy this, Mojang gets to put this debate to rest, the game ends up more realistic, and there's plenty of opportunities to add more to the game from this basis. I see no flaws, but am open to feedback in the comments to see if any revision should be made. Let's hear it!
