They should be awarded after defeating a dragon boss, it will drop eggs that you can hatch into pet dragons that fight by your side, they will gain health over time.

@Ryan Ricardo that nerfs the whole idea way too much. That suggestion would just make it not worth my time.

I'm just going to add a few of my favorite things I saw in the comments:

A saddle specifically for riding dragons which is hard to get.

    Crossbreeding dragons.

To tame a dragon you either have to answer its five riddles or bring it 3 items, (such as enchanted golden apple, an enderpearl, emerald, goldblock, ect)

You have to fight the momma dragon to obtain the egg(s)- like a mini boss fight, and when you do, she drops scales which you could use to make armour, swords, tools..

The dragons having distinct patterns to their elements.

    And.. Yeah :)

Maybe just an end game pet as a use for that dragon egg

Start by introducing the hatching of the egg and raising of the dragon, then make a saddle for it and allow it to be ridden.  But I think the attacking part would be way to OP.  Maybe just keep it for transportation purposes.  You could also allow players to make towers with end crystals to enable the dragon to do different things the same way beacons do.

Maybe not with groundbreaking powers, but slight potion effect like. For instance a dragon found in snowier biomes, would breath fire and it would be blue similar to Soulfire but not as strong and would also apply weakness to whatever it attacks. It would make sense because when it’s cold most people are weaker, and these effects would vary according to what biome you are in as the dragon type would be different.

I think that if they add a dragon they should add a new illager type called the poacher that would hunt and capture dragons, making you have to find and rescue it, thus balancing them so they're not super overpowered. Depending on the type of dragon, either a baby dragon, that would stay at a pet size should be able to hold a small amount of items and make enderman not aggressive when you have it near, or the addition of a full size rideable dragon. If adding a full size dragon, there should be another balance so it does not make the elytra obsolete, like a stamina bar similar to the hunger or air bars that a player gets, and it only recharges when fed or resting, and to add to that, there should be a synthetic environment that the player has to create for the dragon to rest and heal (i.e. a bed of end stone or obsidian) the food source for the dragon should be chorus fruit seeing as in the game now there is no real use for the fruit other than for messing around. Breeding of dragons shouldn't be implemented, to balance the number of dragons there are, making it so you have to get a new egg each time you want another. There should also be a challenge or quest added to hatching the dragon, and I think with the new nether update, the nether would be the perfect place to do it, making you have to go to the end for the egg, the isles for the food, the nether to hatch it, and finally have it nest in the overworld, adding a lengthy adventure to acquire such a prized creature

The pet dragon would be a great addition to minecraft. You could use it and collect dragons breath from it instead of having to go to the end every time you needed some for potion crafting

Start with a Dragon built prototype - something like an Iron Golem - that defends the village in the same way a Golem does, only it can fly and breathe fire... then work on various types of dragons... The idea of a "Dragon Relm" you could build a gate to access, AFTER defeating the Elder Dragon - simply "reseed" the original world, remove all other typical mobs & replace them with 10% spawn rate of Dragons + dragon-relm-mob-type-creatur - allow only 1 Dragon per 100 block radius & only 1 of each dragon-type per 500 block radius. Dragons drop unique Dragon-items for forging and creating "Pet" and "Gardian" Dragons in other Realms

This is a fantastic idea. My sons thought you could fly them to get places faster and fight against mobs. And obsidian armour would be a defense against angry dragons if it was brought out and was fire proof

Maybe there can be only one dragon in a game which is hatched from the dragon egg in the end and you have to got to a certain temple and hatch it there to get that dragon. This would make it more balanced and if you want to spawn the ender dragon again you place down the end crystals and the dragon comes back and takes your dragon away as it is her child and you get your dragon back when you beat her.

I think that once you get the dragon egg from the end you should do a ritual/thing where you place it into a biome and it becomes a dragon of that biome; you put the dragon into the ocean it becomes a water dragon, into the nether and it becomes a fire dragon, etc.

It should hatch from the dragon egg

That's awesome dragons are my favorite and I think you should tame them with raw salmon or any kind of fish except for puffer fish or meet or new meat should be added so are you okay and give a special kind of meat to each dragon

I think that is a wonderful idea, and that like in the end when you kill the dragon you get a egg. Like there should be a way to hatch the dragons and there should also be more dragons like you suggested.

I think you should be able to hatch your own baby ender dragon but I don't think the different elements really fit Minecraft.

I think the dragons should be found in the new extreme hills biome in its own structure called the dragons lair. Where you must beat the boss dragon In order to get to the eggs which should take 100 Minecraft days to hatch in a new block or buildable structure called the hatchery.

sounds incredibly game breaking, it would probably render dogs useless, ruin the difficulty progress and crash your pc so much it implodes. still a cool idea though.

I think it could have said elemental powers, but you'd need the ender dragon egg to spawn it

They should definitely have special powers based on the biome they’re from. Also, none of them should be as big as the ender dragon because that would take away from the aw of the ender dragon. You should also only be able to fully tame one at a time; meaning that if you already have a pet dragon, you can’t get another until yours dies. A lot of people say that it would be too overpowered but not if balanced properly.

Maybe it's cool if you can hatch them from the enderdragon egg? I think that they should be extremely rare in the overworld (just like pink sheep).

Maybe if there was an experimental game mode this'd work well but it'd take away from the vanilla game modes.

Yeah ... Adding dragons in the game is very complex. If the player had a dragon, he (the player) could fly (excellent defense and quick escape), spit fire (excellent short and medium range attack) and shoot fireballs (excellent long range attack).

Basically no mob in the game would be a pariah for him, causing a lot of imbalance in the game.

To fix this imbalance in the game I would rename this topic from "tame dragons" to "rent dragons", why?

To get a dragon, the player would have to negotiate with a dragon tamer (a rare type of villager). He would ask the player for services (for example: eliminate 200 zombies, eliminate 20 skeletons from the snow ...) in return for rewards. As soon as we started the service we would have:

    O domador seguiria o jogador(não deixe o domador morrer !) fiscalizando-o.

Among the rewards is the dragon cell that lasts 30 days for minecraft. When the cell is damaged, the player must perform another tamer service.(so dragon for hire)
