We need a trading system where everything in the game can be bought and sold, and if we buy low and sell high we can make a profit.
Obviously, price points would be put in to keep people from abusing it. This will make players think about cost (time, effort) vs reward. Spending 64 emeralds for 1 diamond is very expensive; even for the best AFK farm. Diamonds are supposed to be expensive. Even with the a full inventory of emeralds at this price point a player would get 27 diamonds. So, it would take a while to get a full inventory of diamonds with AFK farms; as it should be. One could easily argue, it's faster to mine them out.
By the time you're done making a farm big enough to produce emeralds at a rate comparable to what is described above you're pretty much at end game and are beyond a dire need for diamonds and are building for creative purposes.
