Frozen sponges and some new mechanics

Frozen sponges can be made by leaving sponges in cold biomes. There should be a chance for the wet sponge to turn into a frozen sponge when left exposed to cold. Frozen sponges can turn back into wet sponges when left exposed to heat in warm biomes. Wet sponges could also be turned into dry sponges when left in warm biomes. Unlike in the Nether, the process would be slow and random. To prevent this process from happening in cases where the player does not want to lose their frozen or wet sponges, one can use some new item to create a mechanic similar to copper waxing.
