Now that the beacon beam visibility has been "fixed" so that placing a beacon at bedrock no longer makes the functioning beam invisible I would like to request we get that flexibility back in some way. While I do appreciate that visibility at a distance is good to have for beacons, I would love to be able to hide a functioning beam as well, mostly for aesthetic reasons (though I understand the PVP reasons as well). I appreciate the gameplay value of trade offs (chestplate vs elytra, pick vs axe, etc), but this is not a gameplay trade off, it's an appearance trade off...essentially "if you want to have beacon buffs, your build has to look a certain way." I can't believe Mojang would want that to be the message, but it currently is. Additionally, having more flexibility for how to use beacons would be big reason to explore and spend time in the nether to make wither skull farms. There is often little reason to spend time exploring the nether, particularly in late game. Giving us the ability to have a functioning hidden beacon beam would increase flexibility and creative expression and incentivize nether exploration, while not affecting the gameplay of those that don't want it invisible. There are existing ideas for how to do that (tinted glass, etc), which seem like they could work, but whatever way it's accomplished, it would be good to have that creative flexibility back.
