The current system for dying is too punishing, and it appears Mojang knows it. Peaceful and Easy mode now have keep inventory on by default. I think a really good way to make dying a bit less brutal would be to make it so items that have been renamed in an anvil don't despawn. I could maybe see this being used for griefing in a server setting, as it could be used to generate a lot of lag. This is why I propose it as a game rule that can be toggled.
