The ancient golems are creatures that managed to survive when the sculk took over the ancient cities. How? Because they're silent. They hover just above the ground, making no noise.
The ancient golems are harmless, to players and wardens, but they can still be helpful. Whenever you walk up to one and interact with it, a number will appear on it. The ancient golem will then follow you around as long as you're within the ancient city, and watch for you destroying sculk blocks. After you mine the first one, the number it is showing goes to one. It then goes up by one for each sculk block you mine, until the number it is showing matches the one it originally displayed. It then gives you a reward, based on the number of sculk blocks it asked you to mine:
- 10: emerald
- 20: ward armor trim
- 30: iron axe
- 40: 50 xp
- 50: 3 diamonds
(It doesn't have to give you these, it could be other things.)
Finally, getting back to the lore, the ancient golems were designed to work as a delivery service in ancient cities, but now are carrying things that they had on them when the sculk took over. They want you to clear away the sculk to help restore the city to its former glory, when its creators still lived.
Of course, we all know the creators are (probably) dead. But if your suspect the same thing about the builders of the ancient cities as me, it's very possible that the creators' descendants are still alive today...
