Make bamboo usable as wood without crafting table

I admit in many cases it won't matter a lot, as wood is usually a fairly common resource. However, when bamboo is your only option to access wood (like on a custom world with limited resources), it is quite frustrating to find you can't, because in order to craft a bamboo block, you need to already have a crafting table, which requires wood.
This is a flaw of the bamboo wood set, basically reducing it to a decorative or more easily farmable alternative to whatever wood type you find first, and makes it the only wood set not usable on its own.

Some solutions for this would be:

a) have bamboo blocks only require 4 bamboo, so they can be crafted in the small crafting grid

b) use an extra step. Four bamboo create like a bundle of bamboo or something, 4 of these combined again would then create the block. (The benefit of this is that bamboo blocks don't get too cheap, as bamboo is pretty easy to farm)
