The Pale Garden update has opened the door to another color of wood that has since been missing from the game: white! So, why not also look at the opposite end of that spectrum? Black is a key color of wood that in my opinion, would fit in nicely to the games esthetic. Here is how I envision this.
Black wood can be obtained solely by farming Withered Trees which, do not generate naturally. These trees can be grown using any sapling and Withered Bonemeal. To get withered bonemeal, you can kill wither skeletons for their Withered Bones, and use these new bones to craft withered bonemeal. The shape of withered trees will be dependent on the sapling that was used to grow it. For example, an oak sapling would grow an oak-shaped tree, and a birch sapling would grow a birch shaped tree.
Another use I can see for the withered bonemeal is to grow Gloomshrooms. Gloomshrooms can be grown by using withered bonemeal on a nether fungi. The fungi itself would grow as normal however, the shroomlights underneath will be shriveled and gray, and instead of emitting light, they will consume light! a sort of anti-torch if you will. A gateway to a moody setting without the need of a roof overhead!
