To make Minecraft's combat more self-expressive, there should be special abilities. You would get these by putting lapiz lazuli blocks into an enchanting table. Like the enchantments, you could buy and put abilities on your weapons (swords, axes, tridents, and maces). Although, unlike enchantments, all abilities would be equal in power to promote unique builds. You would also be able to find special abilities while exploring special structures, like end cities, that wouldn't appear in enchanting tables.
To use an ability, you would press right-click on your mouse and lose hunger bars depending on how powerful the ability was. A weapon would only be able to have one ability on it, and after using an ability, there would be a cooldown, similar to the cooldown on wind charges and horns. This would be for using an ability in general, excluding what weapon you used, so one couldn't keep spamming abilities by repeatedly switching to different weapons.
These special abilities would jive well with the newest combat snapshot from Jeb as it would give more rewards for eating to gain back hunger bars, offsetting the risk of getting interrupted while eating and having to do the full animation again. Likewise, it would give some much-needed importance to enchanting tables, as the most optimal route currently is just ignoring them and trading with a librarian villager.
Finally, different weapons would have different abilities, and no ability would stray too far from simplicity and mediocrity.
