It's always been difficult to collect large amounts of clay balls for smelting into bricks and crafting into brick blocks and other useful recent additions. Adding more clay blocks in the world in recent updates helps, however I feel the brick block is one that is unlike all other resources due to the player being unable to fortune clay. Therefore, I suggest the following:
- Clay Blocks generate as normal. These blocks can now be affected by the fortune enchantment, dropping higher rates of clay balls when mined. Silk Touch drops the actual clay block as normal.
- Clay Balls will now be crafted into Compacted Clay via the current Clay recipe (2x2 clay balls). This new block has a slight texture variation to the original Clay Block, but makes the original clay block act more like an ore now, as you can silk touch an ore and still fortune it. Compacted clay can be smelted into terracotta, whereas the original Clay Block cannot.
This solves the issue of collecting clay balls for smelting purposes, and removes the infinite loop of if players were able to fortune the original clay block. I feel this change would add another usable blue/gray block to the palette, and still keep nostalgic vanilla functionality whilst making the bricks and brick blocks to become more easily obtainable to players in survival.
