How could it work: the player could click a menu that adds a waypoint on the floor, this waypoint could have different shapes or colors, textures to categorize such places, and after a certain distance, these waypoints could be seen floating around the distance, counting how many blocks far you are. This could implement a menu that showcases the added waypoints, and if the player has cheats enabled, the player could teleport with a tap.
Design: the waypoints could include the faces/head graphics of mobs or designs like block textures, or structures and/or nature.
Mob heads like, Creeper, could represent dangerous places, or mob dungeons/spawners, spider heads could represent a spider cave or spawner, and an enderman head could represent an end portal or a cave. A villager head could represent a village, an iron golem head could represent either a village or an iron farm, a goat head could represent a mountain, an oak tree, could represent a plains biome, a jungle tree could represent a jungle biome. A gold block graphic could represent a mine and so on.
How could it work with maps: in a map the waypoints could be more precisely seen with a relatively medium big graphic in the map with the biome surroundings, without a map you are only able to see it on a “2D View” and not “over the air” view.
