Recently, on the bedrock preview edition side of things, we saw tests regarding new features including resin based ones. These feature included something I found to be rather interesting; the resin clump, which outside of crafting usages, can be placed onto any blocks, adding small orange details onto it. It functions quite like vines do, meaning you can pack more than one resin clump with a 1x1x1 block space.
All and all, this part of the feature feels great, these kinds of small details would be fun for building. However, as it currently stands with resin, only one colour is available. While the game could be just fine with a system where we use different materials for these small details, such as perhaps slime balls for green details, I think a more unified system would be better for the player base.
For this, I would propose wax (or wax ball perhaps), which would act as an intermediary stage between candles and honey comb. You would first turn honey comb into wax, either through a crafting recipe or by "melting" it in a furnace. The wax could then be coloured (which I think makes more sense than colouring a solid candle) into any of the 16 die colours available, still using the one way system currently in place for candles.
Coloured or not, once you've got your wax, you could then makes candles using string, make blocks of wax by combining 4 wax, or use it directly to add little specks of colours onto blocks as details, which would enhance building and detailing.
