another cool improvement is for it's eyes to fade in and out so that at one glance the creaking is camouflaged and at another it isn't. would really make it more creepy.

The problem with simply upgrading the damage of the creaking is that it would impose onto mojang's idea of a "vanilla start".

    Another thing:
    - They shouldn't make walking sounds unless they're very close to you
    - They should all charge at you when you're breaking their block, even if you're seeing them.
    - They should have several poses they switch into when they switch to being still, similar to the weeping angels
    - They should probably be made invisible or changed to look differently while they're walking, since it looks pretty silly seeing them penguin-walk towards you.

To make getting hit by the Creaking more challenging, maybe every time a player is hit, all torches within 10 blocks of them break: this would only really be interesting if other mobs can spawn in the pale garden of course.

It would be cooler if the mob followed the player with its eyes, but if the creaking was close to the player when you look at it the creaking should close its eyes for more camouflage. If you want to really make the forest spooky then add vines that hang out of the trees leaves and if the player touches one, it will grab the player or mob and hold them upside down also your screen would be flipped upside down and the only way to escape would be to use a axe or sword on the wood-colored vine to break it. It would really give the vibe that the trees are alive and trying to get you making the whole thing really spooky.
