Exploration is its own enemy - exploring means generating new chunks, and new chunks means two things: 1) Your world size increases, and 2) The chunks you generate won't change. This might not matter much for the average, casual player, but for some it is crucial.
Flying is the most popular mean of transportation. It is extremely fast, but it still generates chunks that will exist in your world file forever.
My solution? While flying very high up in the sky (build limit beyond render distance), new chunks no longer generate.
