This sort of goes along with many of the other noteblock suggestions here, but I'd like to take them slightly further. Adding some new functions to noteblocks would bring a new wave of creativity to the noteblock makers of Minecraft. These new functions would be as follows:
1. Sustained noteblock- As long as there's a redstone signal applied to the noteblock the sound would continue to play
- This would also offer an opportunity to add a crescendo and decrescendo to the beginning and end of the played note
2.Restone signal would affect the volume of the note in either 8 or 16 steps of volume. A low redstone signal would be a quiet sound and a strong signal would be a loud sound.
- Perhaps instead of depending on redstone signal for the loudness of the note another mechanic such as crafting a note block with wool could affect the loudness
- I.E. No wool would create a noteblock, 1 wool would create a slightly muted noteblock, the more wool added to the noteblock in crafting would mute it further and further
* Doing it the wool way would prevent older noteblock contraptions from breaking
* Con of doing it this way, crescendos as a feature of a tune would be harder to do, but still possible if not a bit more clunky, wherein using signal strength could fade a sound rather than being a ridged step.
