As part of the new minecart updates, there should be a way for minecarts to smoothly travel in and out of the nether, while keeping the same speed. Not only would this be cool for roller coasters and stuff, this would also give them an advantage over ice boats and elytras, as you would instantly hop between dimensions without having to get in and out of portals.
To do this there should be a block called "nether rails", that can be crafted like an activator rail but with blaze rods rather than sticks. These can be placed inside of nether portals (which will appear as half a rail), and can be toggled with a redstone signal. When the rails receive a pulse, it checks to see if a similar portal exists in the opposite dimension (using the same rules as conventional portal linking), and if so activates for ten seconds. If a cart touches the activated rail it instantly sends you to the nether (without the delay in survival mode) and sends you out with the exact same speed as you entered, in the direction the rail faces. If deactivated, your cart will stop. This functioning will help reduce lag by telling the game to prepare for nether loading, while still allowing for seamless travel (save for loading time)
Even if the carts stay at the same speed in the base game (though I hope it's increased to at least 20 blocks per second), by shaving off 10-15 seconds on either end you can allow for minecart travel to be both faster and smoother.
