In snapshot 24w37a Ender pearls will load the chunks they are in when thrown. This is over all a great change but with one caveat. Player often like to suspend their thrown Ender pears in a bubble column to delay their impact. This same feature can now be used to create chunk loaders. Which also is something many players look forward to. However it is not possible to have one without the other. If you have an Ender pearl in a bubble column it will always load that chunk. On a server with multiple people and many such pearls around it could potentially significantly contribute to lag.
I propose for Ender pearls to only load chunks if they actually have any sideways motion. If an Ender pearl does not have sideways motion the chunk would unload after 10 seconds. This would still allow players to create chunk loaders with them! It would just cause a little more effort than a soul sand and 3 water blocks. You can still juggle them from side to side with pistons or flowing water on top.
