magma blocks appear to be visually colder lava, so it dont flow anymore, giving option to heat them up in furnace, producing lava, would make sense to me, being alternative lava source, aside that pumping out whole nether, or making slow dripstone infinite generator, in return, making lava cool down partialy in cauldron being next to ice, or to make it more interesting, other cauldron, with water inside, making magma block of lava in one and evaporating water in other, making also alternative source of magma blocks
it would be balanced in my opinion, since farming/crafting magma cream may be easy but it is action needed to be done before using this as renewable source, and magma blocks are not too common block in overworld to just mine bunch of them, opposed to dripstone lava maker
lava would be smelted in furnace or blast furnace (with 2x speed if both would be option), and if bucket would be provided, filling it up with lava, same as wet sponge can give you back water bucket, making automation impossible or at least harder than just smelting bunch of stuff (I am now not aware of any automatic water bucket filling using wet sponges in vanila minecraft using furnaces, if it dont exist, providing way would be nice), also it can be set to smelt much slower and thus needing more fuel and time to balance it more, giving lava bucket is currently most powerful single piece of fuel and theoretically with smart counting, one could make infinite furnace using this method over and over
