Apples should visually go on trees (seeing apples or an apple sprite on the leaves of trees) You can pluck off these apples like sweet berries in the taiga biome giving you apples. The apples when put in a crafting menu should turn into apple seeds that you can plant on hoed farmland to grow an apple tree sapling which when planted on a grass block grows an apple tree!
