Problem:
The inventory and hotbar have a very limited number of slots. For exploring and similar activities this adds to the game as you have to make decisions on what's worth keeping and manage your inventory under pressure. Additionally ender chests and shulker boxes make it easier in the late game.
However, for building the inventory limitations can be very annoying especially with the constantly growing number of blocks and increasing complexity in building styles and techniques.
Solution:
My solution is a late game "building Item" (crafted with chorus fruit?) that essentially combines block variants into a tool. Each group of block variants could get it's own tool or it could be a single tool that could be assigned to a group. For example it could be an "Oak Wood Saw" which when held could place any oak wood block (log, planks, stairs, fences, etc) and be cycled by pressing middle click. It should be able to be configured to only cycle through the selected blocks.
The tool would create these items from the lowest level of the variant group (in this case the oak log) in the players inventory. E.g. you could have a stack of oak logs in your inventory and with the tool place any oak wood block while consuming oak logs. Excess variants would be stored in the tool meaning it would only have to store a couple of each variant max.
This would help greatly with building while not affecting exploration or other facets since block variants really only become a problem when building.
