A New Gamerule: PetFriendlyFire

This has probably been suggested so many times already, in several different places. When disabled, tamed wolves, cats, parrots (or any other tamable mob in the future) cannot be attacked by the player. When enabled, players can attack tamed mobs. Very simple change, would help a lot when fighting with your wolves and don't want to accidentally attack or kill them.

Enabled by default.
