Let's talk about it more! I feel like even the slightest, vanilla-friendly upgrade to this block is needed.
I don't think we need a totally new, complex system for how it's working. We still should be able to build its base from the currently available ores/materials, still have the same buffs by new layer added, but the materials powering it should at least be able to increase its effect range radius: (just quick suggestions, not anything absolute)
- Iron Ingot = 20 blocks
- Gold Ingot = 40 blocks
- Diamond = 70 blocks
- Emerald = 150 blocks (or diamond being 150 and Emerald 70)
All of the above are the bare minimum tbh.
And... Since with the current system powering it with netherite ingot is an unnecessary waste considering the rarity of these, we should be able to do this simultaneously as a new, additional option:
- Netherite Ingot = the chosen buff is active ANYWHERE you go for a specific period of time (maybe 1 hour) WHILE wearing at least one piece of netherite armour.
It's like the beacon would be able to channel its power to anything netherite when powered by it. And it would be easy to end the buff(s) earlier if needed by just unequipping all netherite armour once. Good for some sort of longer excursions/mining sessions further away but still not so overpowered, because pretty pricey and basically and end-game feature.
I also think that the beacon itself with any number of base layers should give you on the surface level night vision within maybe 3 chunks.
