For as long as the game existed. There have been features that don't have a purpose except to stall the player and distract them. Like the warden, wither, and elder guardian. There's not really a point to them is there? Sure the wither gives you a beacon, but that's it. At least the ender dragon is the final boss, sure it technically just stalls the player, but it serves it's purpose. It's simple, add a meaningful reason to seek these entities and some structures. I get that some features are just there to add ambience. I think it would be good to add purpose to most future mobs and the three I mentioned, and leave some for ambience.
