If you improve existing features, such as enchantments and horses, it will keep players playing more than adding useless features like the Sniffer. Survival is the best gamemode for having fun because of the feeling of adventure and improvements, so adding more strategic items that are complex but simple, will keep players playing to find the best strategy for them. I personally think that giving survival players more ways to control the environment (snow accumulation, mob spawning, etc.) will make them feel more free and spend more time on their worlds.
