The new piston sounds have been displeasing to a lot of long-time Minecraft players. But there are some genuinely great uses for the quieter pistons. Traps are much easier to set up and be successful with the lower sound. And there are opportunities to play with the sound design of the contraption you make by adding in sounds that were previously over-powered by the pistons, like note blocks, dispenser noises, and music discs.
But there are also some important benefits of the louder original sound. When you are working on a larger project, being able to hear when a piston is not activating on time or when it is stuck in a loop is invaluable for testing. And some projects, especially large ones, utilize the louder sound for the overall design and feel of the contraption. Large flying machines are not nearly as impressive just quietly floating through the air.
The original sound of the piston is so iconic to the block that making such a drastic change breaks a lot of the work and habits of veteran players.
Why not use both? BOTH loud and quiet pistons could have their place. Why not have the new sound for pistons be something like a wax coating or wool pad that is crafted onto the original piston? That way, depending on the project, players have the freedom to choose what block best meets their needs. The new sound would suddenly become a welcome addition instead of a contentious one.
Machines that need the old sound still work, but machines that benefit from the new sound do too.
