Since there's a lot of controversy over the new piston sounds, but there is definitely a need/use for the reduced sound level of the new sounds, why not create a mix?
Normally, the pistons would have their typical sounds, but if you right-clicked them with a carpet, then the sound would be "muffled"to be the new sound. You would visually see the carpet you put when the piston is extended (it would cover the base around where the piston arm is connected to the body). It could have different colors for the different carpet types which would give some variety and could be removed with shears.
There is already a precident for wool being used to muffle sounds for sculk sensors, so why not extend it to this? It would let pistons keep there original charm, while allowing people to muffle piston sounds in places that need to be quieted.
