    Not a fan of your off the walls proposal, but I definitely agree the sound needs a rework. It sounds okay when it's a single piston but as soon as it's multiple pistons, it sounds really bad and somehow it sounds wet.

    I do think it's fine to keep the old sound effect and just lower the volume and range.

    The sound effects have been the same for over 12 years since it was implemented, I think it should be considered an classic and shouldn't be changed, or at least, the new sound should have similar style/characteristics to the old one.

    Same reason why the design of the new Diamond Ore texture looks pretty much the same as the old texture. Because it's iconic.

    The sound of old pistons is used as one of the gimmicks.
    The new piston is no longer a gimmick. The silent piston itself is a wonderful thing, so I would like it to be crafted as a separate item by combining it with carpets, wool, etc.

    I'm not a fan at all of the new piston sounds, it sounds wet and ploppy. Personally I've never had a problem with the old sound, but maybe something more like a smooth sliding stone would be better.

    The new piston sound makes me think of honey blocks, not anything mechanical. So yeah, while quieter, it's actually worse.

    I agree, the new sound feels too weak.
    the Heavy Piston idea is a bit out there but it has potential.

    old sound was perfect, maybe too loud, but I think I like how clunky it sounds when its loud

    Unpopular opinion but, simply making the old sound quieter wouldn't have been it tbh. The sound of the friction is too loud proportionally to the ending 'thump'. Also I could see the current iteration fitting well for a more lightweight, or 'quiet' version of the piston, used in secret doorways, with its own crafting recipie.

    With that being said, the new sound still requires further tweaking, as it lacks the frictional sound as well as the weight of the 'thump' being lackluster. Readding the frictional sound at half effect of the old one, as well as making the end thump feel more 'weighty' would suffice.

    I agree that simply lowering the volume of the old sound wouldn't work without at least SOME retooling.
    I think the new sound isn't actually that bad, it just need a couple of changes:
    -Make the end of the sound have more of a harder "Thud" rather than the current one's more wet "Thump" sound.
    -I can still hear a bit of the old "shove" sound from the old Pistons in the new sound; make that slightly louder so it's actually present and not an afterthought.

    Also, having the old sound as part of the "developer textures" pack would be nice :)
