This would be just a cosmetic feature without affecting the sign's function besides the recipe.
The issue currently is that text can often be quite hard to see on the wood texture, especially dark oak. My proposal is to have an alternative recipe that consists of sign + paper for a 'labelled sign'.
A labelled sign would have a large white area covering most of the sign's face besides the edges, which would improve contrast for the text. Either totally plain white (#ffff) or with a very subtle texture similar to washed white concrete. I have made a rough mock-up example below:
