Players seem angry about how totems of undying are effecting hardcore so I have an idea. You could have a 50% chance to drop a totem of dying instead. This would look the same and you would have to use a new table to identify it. For example an identification table. It should cost diamonds to Identify a totem so that totems are no longer farmable. On placement in your off hand the totem of dying could do one of three things. Instantly kill you, damage you and kill you over time or Make you very vaunerable to damage. My favourite is the last one because a player who has ent identified their totem will only realise what happened till it is too late. (The first one works for the same reasons but it is a bit harsh)
