I believe the game would benefit a lot if each type of skeleton dropped a different bone, which could be carved using either a stone cutter or a simple crafting table, to be turned into a blade.
Each bone blade could be crafted into a sword that, when hits an entity, gives it an effect according to the bone type.
The Wither Skeleton's Bone Sword (or Wither Sword) would give the Wither effect. The Stray Bone Sword would make the entity slower, and the Bogged Bone Sword would give them either Hunger or Poison, while the normal Skeleton Bone Sword could be throwable, or be a middle ground between the Stone and Iron swords, but I think it would be nice if the Default Bone Sword could be somehow turned into the other types (not through enchanting, and it would not be reversible).
The game has been in need of some new weapons for a long time, and now with the Mace being added, I think a mid-term new weapon could be useful. Not every new item has to be netherite-level.
