Sweeping edge should not be the default for un-enchanted swords.
There are certainly use cases for sweeping edge and the enchantment does a good job at facilitating those use cases (mainly farms) but for exploration or general use I find that sweeping edge gets in the way and often causes players to hit things accidentally like pets, farm animals, etc. It really feels like you have a lack of control when using a sword. Perhaps it's intentional and maybe even incentivizing the usage of other weapons but if that's not the case, locking this effect behind it's enchantment could be a nice change.
I'm aware combat is something the developers want to revisit so a major change like this might have to wait but I admittedly see a combat overhaul becoming less and less necessary. People have adapted to the 1.9 mechanics and the new weapons always provide a fresh way to vanquish your enemies. I know a change like this wouldn't be small in the eyes of the players but I believe it would be better in the long run and for players who like the sweeping effect, they always have the enchantment available to them.
