Elytras are no longer rocket-powered or obtained from End Cities. Instead, they are used for gliding and breaking long falls and can be crafted in the early game with phantom membranes.
After defeating the Wither/Ender Dragon/Other brand new boss, a new stage of the game is reached, where a variety of more dangerous mobs are released into the world, including an assortment of hostile, fantasy bird mobs that now spawn in different biomes. These mobs drop food and feathers, but also have a rare chance of dropping a brand new item, the Large Feather.
Using the Large Feather, varying levels of new wings can be crafted. These wings completely negate fall damage forever, offer better speed and the ability to fly, similar to creative mode, for a short period of time, which varies.
For example, using any leaves, feathers and a Large Feather, you can craft the weakest of all, the Leaf Wings, also sold by villagers after the new stage of the game is reached. Another one could be the slightly better Bee Wings, crafted with feathers, a Large Feather, honeycomb and honey bottles. Maybe it could go all the way up to ghast or dragon wings?
These wings would encourage exploration and interacting with otherwise overlooked areas of the game to obtain greater flying length, and could be a milestone if Minecraft ever decides to elongate it's progression with newer, harder stages of the game, where mobility is key.
