My idea is adding exploration ropes/line (glowing variant for darker caves) to encourage going deeper in a cave generation with out getting lost. Since we cant map it out this is also a great way to teach how they mark out cave and underwater caves ( so it could also be used in education mode). This would also allow people to explore underwater caves a little easier especially if there was like an arrow patterned rope you could make or marker so you know where the exit is. It can reuse trip hooks in the form of anchors and maybe wool/string to make rope or line (maybe a 2 point lead for flexibility or that can secure 10 times before another length is needed).
If you really wanted to be wild maybe a breeze infused line or block (maybe with a heart of the ocean) for air it would push it till a bit later in game but also makes temples and shipwrecks more tangible as a player without exploiting a door to breathe so far down
