The way leaf blocks currently work(and have always worked) is bad, and causes forests to be an absolute pain to traverse with short oaks blocking your path and causing the players to have to constantly bushwhack their way through.
SOLUTION:
Instead of having leaf blocks act as solid blocks, they should behave like web on the sides and bottom, and solid on top.
This would:
-
Allow players to walk on top of the leaves like they do now
-
allow players to pass through the leaves like you would in real life slowly moving through a bush
-
allow players to climb trees, but jumping up through the low branches
This simply change would fundamentally change the way players treat the forest biome, no longer having to chop it down to get anywhere, while still allowing them to have fun above the canopy.
Additionally, I would like it if all oak trees were their large variant, with a few of the smaller ones at least 3 blocks high to allow players to walk below them, and a new "bush" block added at ground level to basically act the same as the small oaks without being as annoying to deal with.
These bushes could basically be one wood block on the ground surrounded by a circle of leaves with the added possibility of adding a new leaf texture with flowers(lilacs?) as a variant, as well as a new softwood texture, or a block made of sticks that players could use to make Tatami flooring.
