Enchantments on a mace is pretty safe and standard, but I wondered about other ways of upgrading or diversifying the mace in new and interesting ways. So what if other than enchantments, we coat the mace with a material to give a limited but unique effect?
Applying the Coating
Using different metals and materials like iron or lapis, we could craft a coated mace that will give a temporary durability and provides a unique effect. For example, iron coated maces could increase the base damage while gold coated maces can increase looting/drop chance.
The implementation of coatings can be done in a way that it feels useful yet limited. An idea is to make it so that when u craft a coated mace, it refreshes the durability and changes it to the durability of the coat. Example: Iron coat is 250 durability while gold is 150. Once the durability is done, the item is turned back into a normal mace and regains it's original durability. This way, the item would not depend on enchantments like mending or unbreaking to be lasting. Reapplying coats can also give utility to excess materials such as diamonds or iron.
Coating Ideas
Iron - increased durability and damage by 1.5
Diamond - increased durability and damage by 2.5
Netherite - increased durability and damage by 3.5 and fireproof
Gold - increases looting and drop chances
Obsidian - low durability but increases damage by 5
Sculk - increases experience dropped
Copper - chance to spawn lightning bolt
Lapis - kills enchant mace with random enchantment
