Why so many holes?

Why does every mountain have to be hollow?  Why does every village look like a war zone?  I am 64 yo and have been playing for about 15 yrs.  My favorite 'build' is a hobbit hole but I can't find a hill that doesn't open up into a pit of dispair or a village that isn't being swallowed up with holes and water filled ravines.  Can we just dial that back a bit?  Perhaps a choice of full Caves and Cliffs, less, none.  I'm spending more time filling in holes and caves than I am building.

  Yes! The new hollow earth swiss cheese world generation drives me nuts! It’s ugly, overbearing, confusing, and makes survival impossible because you’re always worrying about falling into another massive hole. It’s so hard to build without terraforming entire mountains!!
