When a new update comes out, the already generated chunks in your world won't contain any new features. I think the best solution is this: when updating your world, unsave any saved chunks that the player didn't CHANGE (didn't place nor break any blocks). That also means despawn any entities in said chunks and generate NEW ones when you enter the chunk again! That way your world wouldn't ruin anything you already built, generate the new structures where you didn't do anything, and ALSO generate new mobs like the wolf variants, which wouldn't be able to be found unless traveling really far to new areas. And just for anyone who's confused, passive mobs generate in a chunk when it's loaded for the first time, and after that they're barely able to.
