Copper rails

So basically imagine your standard powered rails but made from copper, now since copper is a worse conductor than gold if powered by a redstone signal it will not go as far, but if yiu make a copper wire consisting of a string of copper blocks (or a dedicated wire block) then a lightning rod then you could hook the rails into it like redstone and the rail becomes electricfied and any minecarts travelling over will get a large boost, it wears off after a while, it gives of particles too, use batteries to store the energy from lightning strikes so that way we can keep our rails supercharged for a long time, but to balance it if you put that into a powered rail it will explode as it was not made to handle that energy
