Aside from Coyotes as a replacement, Dingoes could work as well. They are the descendants of domestic dogs and are their closest relatives. Though they do look pretty similar to the ‘Rusty Wolf’ design.

I have some similar thoughts. One, the Spotted and Rusty wolves should also become their own mobs, as they are based on the African Painted Dogs and Maned Wolf, respectively. I think a Coyote would work well in the deserts, and maybe there could instead be a dingo in the wooded badlands.

I’m pretty sure the Rusty Wolves are supposed to be Ethiopian Wolves. Maned Wolves have black feet. This one doesn’t. It’s facial markings also more closely represent that of an Ethiopian Wolf.

I thought that maybe the striped wolf was supposed to look like the now extinct tasmanian wolf, but maybe that was just me

There aren't sexes or genders in minecraft and the game defys biology and physics and even mythology we finally got more skins to a mob the community has been wanting for awhile, so why do we care so much if certain wolves look like something else this stuff is why they don't add stuff the community as a hole would in joy

I was honestly disappointed as well. But as seen how they barely do any research with Minecraft Education, not surprising they put a non canine in as a "wolf breed". And to be fair I'm surprised Mojang is against the abuse of sharks and dolphins, but sure go let kids tame wild dogs. Not like its a real issue where people think its fine to own coyotes, wolves, african painted dogs, dholes, aardwolves. I'm surprised Mojang was like no more taming ocelots, you get domestic cats from villages because ocelots cannot be tamed!! But then they just went dang... I can't model a simple dog breed or just I don't know have a few medium dog size breeds like the German Shepherd, Lab, Border collie, Irish Setter, like you have so many options to choose from. But no just... choose wild dogs I guess. A shame.
