The enchanting/pseudo magic system Minecraft has was one of the things that really caught my attention when first playing the game. I'd like to see it expanded upon while also providing a potential solution to certain aspects of the game that have been criticised recently.
Instead of getting books from Villagers let us write our own. Using glow ink sacs and a feather we could create a calligraphers pen - or something more "magical" sounding - that lets us write our own enchanted books using a new block - a printing press or research table. We could need a variety of ingredients to make each book, with potentially needing something from the deep dark (or other such rarity/difficulty) in order to create mending books. This has the potential to make mending especially a mid game item rather than an early game one and will give us players a more interesting and involved process to play with alongside giving items that currently only have one use, extra applications.
An expansion on this idea might tie in the archaeology mechanic by allowing us to "do research" at any of the current structures - ocean monument, jungle temple, etc - in order to get enough magical knowledge to create these books. This last point has the potential to be VERY frustrating for players though. The lack of a map really hamstrings players when trying to find a specific biome or structure and any randomness can be highly annoying. Players also may not want to create such a large world.
