Make the water temple worth exploring!

When talking to my sister abt what Minecraft could do to improve the water temple, we came to the conclusion that nothing in there makes you wanna go to one, sd gold for example can be found anywhere else. So to make the temple a place worth exploring. You could add villiage like structures next to them with chests. Also, you could make an item similar to the prismarine shard or you could use just the shard to make a tool that enables you to make carvings in peeled wood blocks such as creeper faces and simple lines and such, like the banner crafting system, if you want.
