Many people have suggested nautili before to give the Nautilus Shell a proper origin, but I haven't heard of a single person get an idea for a mountable one. They'd be really big, maybe as big or bigger than a camel, would spawn uncommonly in oceans and would obviously drop 1 Nautilus Shell
BEHAVIOUR
To ensure Nautilus Shells are still as rare as they are now (and so that owners don't lose them), Nautili would be very difficult to kill. When at low health, they would go into their shell and become invulnerable to most forms of attack. You'd need to deal a LOT of damage at once or do something special like suffocating or burning them. Anyway, Nautili are unrideable until you equip them with a Heart of the Sea. This would tie in very nicely with conduits and be consistent with them. Once you equip them with a Heart of the Sea, their sprite will change and they will grant Conduit Power to anyone riding them. A hearted Nautilus would be able to be ridden, but you are unable to control it without a saddle, which would be equipped like on a horse. Nautili can go down or up by pressing W and looking in the direction or holding jump.
WHY?
The ocean currently lacks any big mobs which is kind of a crime since most of the biggest animals on Earth are all in the ocean. There's also no underwater transportation except (inconsistent) dolphins currently. I personally live underwater even though I really like mounts and pets, so something like this would be an absolute dream
