So I've been thinking of something that would make Wolfs that much more useful with the addition of the Wolf Armor by giving it a different type of boost other than enchantment books or potions: Ointments.
Ointments could be crafted with different plants or other items, and could be applied onto the armor. The Ointments act like a potion that lasts much longer, but can only be applied at their base effect. (Ex: Regeneration I, not Regeneration II or anything higher) Once the ointment effect runs out, it can be reapplied, and only one ointment effect can be applied at a time.
With this, it gives the player the incentive to be able to use plants and flowers for many other uses other than dyes by giving them a sense of utility. Furthermore, it gives plants that would normally not be collected much (Ex: Wither Roses, Torchflowers) and gives them a fun, interesting use.
With the addition of Ointments, other concepts such as a Mortar and Pestle could be added to allow the player to craft them.
Overall, I see Ointments as something that could be added into the vanilla Minecraft experience seamlessly, as it helps promote armors on animals and gives the player more freedom with how they want an animal to shine, whether it comes to being faster, jumping higher, or having more survivability.
